  1. Hello,

My name is Mary Waling. I am Stan's second youngest child. I am writing to you all with sorrow in my heart. My father, Stan Waling, passed away in his sleep yesterday. He was surrounded by family, and he passed on with ease. HIs showing will be at the G.H. Herrmann Funeral Home in Indianapolis, IN. The show is this friday 2/8/13 from 5pm until 9pm. There will be a short church ceremony at the G.H. Herrmann funeral home Saturday at 10:00. From there we will travel up to Brooke, Indiana where he will be buried across the street from his father. I know he would want all of you to know that he has been reminiscing about all of you guys, and telling us stories. I feel obligated to inform you that his email account will be shut down eventually, so if you would like to send condolences you can reach his wife, Donetta at waling.donetta@gmail.com, or you could contact myself at mary.waling@gmail.com

it is not up yet, but the G.H. Herrmann Funeral Home does have an electronic signature book, if you cannot attend where you can send well wishes under his name. Just go to www.ghherrmann.com and look for his name under the obits. The obituary should be out tomorrow in the Indianapolis Star, the West Lafayette Currier, and in the brooke newspaper as well. Once again, my dad spoke of all of you fondly and I am sorry to have to email you all about this.

    Thank you,

    Mary Waling

  4. Mary,

Please accept our sympathies and condolences on the passing of your father. Stan was a great guy, admired by all who knew him. By his own admission he was shy. But that didn't prevent him from leaving an impact. He had a solid character. He didn't say much, but he was quick to smile, or chuckle, or duck his head and grin, which would brighten your day. I don't remember him ever saying anything mean about another person, or treating them unkindly. That is aremarkable virtue.

As a key member of the basketball team, Stan never sought recognition; he
only wanted to do his best to help the team. He worked hard to make that happen. You could tell, because he could sweat up a storm! I think we all saw Stan as a true team player. He always brought the intangibles: energy, teamwork, and sacrifice. I am confident the lives of those he loved were blessed by these qualities.

We lost touch over the years, but when our class developed an online
presence, Stan found us. He used his artistic talent to draw us a class
symbol--a River Rat, based on the old Rat Fink character of our youth. That was Stan, always willing to contribute in his understated way. We will celebrate his life whenever we think of him. And he will inspire us all anew.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your loved ones in this season of parting. May you be comforted, and rejoice in the loving memories you cherish as you celebrate his life.

  5. Mary and Donetta,

I am so sorry for your loss!  Stan was a great person admired universally by his high school classmates.  He was an outstanding basketball player in his youth and one heck of an artist later in life!  We will all miss him very much.  If there is anything you need, you can always send an email to wlhs1970@yahoogroups.com and one of us will certainly step up to help!

Again, my sincerest condolences and may God bless you and the entire Waling family.

  7. It is with great sadness that I read this. I am sorry that I was not able to send a note to him when he sent one. Please know that you will all be in my prayers. Cherish the memories you have and remember that one day you will see him again. He was a fine person and I shall think of him whenever I look at my picture he did of the River Rat. May God Bless you and hold you close at this time.
